The Portenta H7 also comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, camera interface and a GPU. With only 32KB of flash storage the Uno again falls short of the 2MB found on the Pico.īut how does the Pico shape up against Arduino’s flagship board the Portenta H7? Well the Portenta H7 features a dual core Arm Cortex M7 + M4 that can run up to 480 MHz and have up to 2MB of flash storage and 1MB of RAM. SRAM on the RP2040 is 264KB, again much more than the Uno’s 2KB. First of all, we have a dual core Arm Cortex M0+ running at up to 133 MHz, much faster than an UNO’s 16 MHz 328P. The RP2040 used in the Raspberry Pi Pico is a level above a typical microcontroller. Microcontrollers do not necessarily need multiple cores and fast speeds as they are typically used for a single part of a process. While the ATMega328 is never going to compete with an Arm processor, it is a reliable chip for projects, proven by the countless number of Arduino projects on offer.Īrm chips are becoming more common with microcontrollers, Adafruit, Seeed and SparkFun have all developed boards with Arm chips. For example Arduino’s Portenta H7 has a dual core Arm Cortex M7+M4 CPU. The older and more popular Arduino boards are powered by Atmel chips such as the ATMega328P but the later boards now feature Arm CPUs. Winner: Raspberry Pi Pico SoC of Raspberry Pi Pico vs Arduino All of this from a $4 board means the Raspberry Pi Pico is a low cost “Swiss Army knife” of GPIO pins. But what the Pico also offers are a series of programmable IO (PIO) pins which can be configured to simulate other interfaces / protocols such as WS2812 “NeoPixels”, they can also be used to offload complex tasks to a background process. The Raspberry Pi Pico GPIO offers plenty of digital IO, three analog inputs and multiple I2C, SPI and UART connections. Adopting the DIP layout, the Raspberry Pi Pico provides us with an easy to use form factor which is easy to embed into a project. It is a more convenient package compared to the Raspberry Pi and Arduino Uno style layouts which favour a larger layout. The DIP package can be soldered into a carrier board, placed into a breadboard or stacked atop compatible addons. The DIP package is nothing new, Arduino boards such as the Micro have been using it for years. If you need a soldering iron, we have a great list of the best soldering irons for you to choose from. All 40 pins are broken out to standard pads and, around the perimeter, there are castellations which can be used to solder the Pico to a carrier board in a similar fashion to surface mount electronics. US keyword trends over 5 years (without Covid) What was discovered is that almost every category has a spike in interest at the same time as Covid with a couple outliers.įigure 5. Here we take a look at the same date range, the same categories, and the same keywords, but removing Covid and adding 2 additional topics depression and anxiety. Were people searching about other illnesses more during Covid or less? The greater interest lies in how other symptoms and illnesses were impacted by Covid. It’s easy to see that once Covid hit the United States in March 2020, we see a huge spike in interest for Covid related keywords, no surprise. The first graph below shows the trend for our categories over a 5 year period. Comparing how these keywords trend seasonally as well as relative to each other provides the most insight on the variation in trend between these topics. We don’t just want to know the trend of a specific keyword like “allergy”, but also its related keywords such as “allergy symptoms” and “seasonal allergies”. Within each category, the data presented represents an aggregate of 50 of the highest search volume keywords related to the category. Were people searching about other illnesses more during Covid or less because Covid was the only topic on everyone’s mind? To answer this question, we explore different trends related to illnesses and symptoms to see how current events (in this case, COVID-19) affects interest in other related topics. Not only did it affect everyone’s livelihoods, it also affected search. Trends can help you predict user behaviour and optimize landing pages, create new content ahead of these shifts, and prepare your content roadmap ahead of the new year.įor the healthcare industry, COVID-19 changed everything. For example in eCommerce, seasonality is very important and will help you decide how and when to market certain products. There are many reasons why you may want to closely examine google trends data. We will be going through some of these visualizations below! Exploring A Relevant Trending Topic: COVID-19 To visualize and make sense of this data, we use Matplotlib, a simple Python data visualization library, to output several time series charts. This results in a table with an interest level for each of the overall topics of interest, which can then be visualized to compare and explore patterns in and between each topic. Once the data has been pulled for every keyword, it then averages the overall interest level across all keywords in each grouping. Example populated output data table Processing and visualizing the data It then populates the table with the returned interest data. The process of pulling the interest levels via a Google Trends API is automated by iterating through and making requests to the API for each keyword in the input table. weekly) for which they would like the data. A user can also specify filters like the timeframe (e.g. The script takes in a CSV of hundreds of keywords and their groupings as an input (example below). In order to efficiently pull the required data to draw meaningful insights, we built a script that requests Google Trends insights data for a desired set of keywords and relevant topic of interest, and then visualize these search trends. Here at Ayima, we build custom Python scripts, allowing our clients to pull data from a variety of sources at any desired level of aggregation. It allows for keywords to be grouped together forming higher-level topics of interest, and the analysis and comparison of trends across these groupings, rather than just looking at individual terms and not getting a full and representative picture of the overall trend. Here is where being able to use an API to automate and pull data for a customized set of keywords can be very powerful. This is a very tedious and inefficient task. To paint a bigger picture of a specific topic of interest, which requires comparing more than just the allowed 5 keywords, you would need to manually grab data for potentially hundreds or thousands of individual queries. Google holds a lot of powerful data, but only a fragment of the data is shown in the Google Trends interface. It can be used to do keyword research when producing new content, determining seasonal trends to help decide when to launch new products, figuring out what topics were just a short-lived-fad and are no longer trending (whipped coffee and Tiger King perhaps) and so much more. The data from Google Trends can provide extremely valuable insights for many different use cases. For the year 2020, the top trending search queries globally were “Coronavirus” and “Election Results”. Google Trends is a trusted tool that analyzes the popularity of some of the top search queries. Many of the toolbar buttons that add objects in FreeCAD actually do two things: add the object, and recompute. We must do that manually, whenever we need: Our box is added in the tree view, but nothing happens in the 3D view yet, because when working from Python, the document is never recomputed automatically. Let's use one of the methods to add a new object to our document: Names that begin with an underscore are usually there for the internal working of the module, and you shouldn't care about them. Usually names that begin with a capital letter are attributes, they contain a value, while names that begin with small letter are functions (also called methods), they "do something". Let's see what we can do with it:Įxplore the available options. The parentheses are mandatory when you are calling a Python function, such as this one. If you would add a dot after newDocument, instead of the parentheses, it would show you everything that is contained inside the newDocument function. The window that pops up therefore shows you everything that is contained inside "FreeCAD". In Python, the dot is used to indicate something that is contained inside something else (newDocument is a function that is inside the FreeCAD module). This is similar to pressing the "new document" button on the toolbar. Before choosing "newDocument", have a look at the other options available.Īs soon as you press Enter our new document will be created. This makes it very easy to explore the functionality available. Even better, each entry in the autocomplete list has a tooltip explaining what it does. If you type this in the FreeCAD Python console, you will notice that as soon as you type "FreeCAD." (the word FreeCAD followed by a dot), a windows pops up, allowing to quickly autocomplete the rest of your line. Let's start by creating a new empty document: If this is the first time you are coding in Python, consider reading this short Introduction to Python before going further, it will make the basic concepts of Python clearer. In this chapter, you will be able to use both methods, but it is highly recommended to use the Python Console, since it will immediately inform you of any typing error. In the console, you write Python commands one by one, which are executed when you press return, while the macros can contain a more complex script made of several lines, which is executed only when the macro is launched from the same Macros window. There are two easy ways to write Python code in FreeCAD: From the Python console (menu View -> Panels -> Python Console), or from the Macro editor (menu Tools -> Macros -> New). If you are interested in learning more, the FreeCAD documentation wiki has an extensive section related to Python programming. In this chapter, we will discover very generally the Python language. This system also uses the Python console, by simply recording everything that is done in it. By leaving the Python console open, you can literally see the Python code unfold as you work, and in no time, almost without knowing it, you will be learning some Python language.įreeCAD also has a macros system, which allows you to record actions to be replayed later. It is often useful to perform operations for which there is no toolbar button yet, or to check shapes for problems, or to perform repetitive tasks:īut the Python console also has another very important use: Every time you press a toolbar button, or perform other operations in FreeCAD, some Python code is printed in the console and executed. FreeCAD has an advanced Python console, available from menu View->Panels->Python console. Some workbenches of FreeCAD and most of the addon workbenches are fully programmed in Python. You can, for example, create new objects, modify their geometry, analyze their contents, or even create new interface controls, tools and panels. With it, you can access and control almost any feature of FreeCAD. You will be able to use it in many other applications, such as Blender, Inkscape or GRASS.įreeCAD makes extensive use of Python. It is embedded in many other applications, which makes it a very valuable tool to learn. It also has a series of features that makes it specially interesting for us FreeCAD users: It is very easy to learn, specially for people who have never programmed before. Python is a widely popular, open-source programming language, very often used as a scripting language, embedded in applications, as is the case with FreeCAD.
